Uncensor - Branding & Campaign

2016

UNCENSOR is an awareness project that aims at questioning censorship and creating an awareness about it in this democratic country. We believe in the freedom of speech and expression. With the country's history of taking offense and censoring every form of art and expression, We want to make sure that we do not head into a likeminded future.

Uncensor social media presence

Our target group are the young people of the country, from ages 18-25 as we feel these are the people who are at their most crucial stage right now. They have the power to question the society and create a free culture where no one is scared to have a strong opinion.

Keeping our target audience in mind, our brand needed a strong, dynamic online presence to reach out effectively.

So as we started brand identity design we thought that it was important to keep it simple and direct as an abstract concept wouldn’t have worked as well in talking to the people.

UNCENSOR for true democracy.
The tagline compliments the name to provide context and puts the message forward.

The brand identity is inspired from the Barricade Tape. Something used by the cops to restrict an area. It’s a restriction to what could be a very interesting situation/place.

So in our context, it keeps us from the complete picture. (How we hear rumors about, and try to put parts together) The curiosity stays. We as a democracy aren’t a crime scene, and we should not be kept away from anything. So the letters in the start and end are stepping up above that.

Social media is one of the most important platforms to reach out to our audience. A strong and consistent presence should be maintained, aiming to increase the reach every day. Along with the mainstream campaigns, special social media posts to be made to maintain an online presence and engage more people..

Apart from integrating the logotype on different things, we thought it is important for us to design special merchandise to appeal to our audience.

Clever, fun illustrated merchandise to be made. This will stand out from our otherwise serious take on the subject and appeal in a light hearted manner. These include notebooks, t shirts, mugs and other stationary and apparel items. Illustrations by Pashang Dadyburjor

BlurryFace Campaign. Blurry face denoting a vague opinion, blurry line. As with censorship, people have started self censoring and are very scared to give opinions. So people always like to give opinions with one foot on the other side. There are no longer any strong opinions. So everyone having a blurry face will show the lack of strong opinions and a boring monotonous world. Our future with censorship.

These are opinions that people have and the thoughts that go on in their heads about censorship and freedom of expression. Taken and then censored to make them polititcally and morally correct, this campaign is supposed to focus on an individual level.

As we want to create awareness and make people think, we thought collaborating with big established brands would be a great idea. This will show their support for the cause. Google in 2012 censored its homepage to protest against US laws, and thus is a strong support. We also designed Adidas shoes that can be sold as special editions to support the cause.
